Woodland Park Zoo invites educators

Eastern Washington educators are invited to a series to fall workshops offered in Seattle by the Woodland Park Zoo. Upcoming events include:

Monday, September 22 (first in a four-part series) – Backyard Habitat Workshop. Participants will receive hands-on training on effective ways of maintaining home, school and community gardens. Topics will include selection and care of native plants, water conservation and yard management without chemicals. This program will run on three consecutive Monday nights and conclude with an all-day event on Saturday, October 11. The cost is $75 person ($140 for two) with 11 clock hours available.

Saturday, September 27 – Educators’ Open House. Participants will be introduced to the zoo education programs available to teachers and students. Registration is free and will include one admission to the zoo.

Saturday, October 18 – Forests: Temperate and Tropical. This workshop, geared to teachers in grades K-9, will focus on the plants, animals and natural history of temperate forests in the Northwest to the tropical forests of Central and South America. The cost is $10, with 7 clock hours available. The application deadline is September 22.

Saturday, December 6 – Fields: Cats of the World. This workshop, geared to teachers in grades K-8, will examine the big cats of the world – their habitats, characteristics and the roles they play in their respective ecosystems. The cost is $10, with 7 clock hours available. The application deadline is November 3.

ESD 101 requests “statements of qualification” from individuals who wish to be considered for employment in the ESD’s new Educational Research Unit. Successful candidates will be expected to write educational research grants (primarily federal) and, if successful, serve as project directors on funded grants.
